I hope you don't mind, I happened upon your post and I've lived up north for quite some time. Some of these are things I'm quite familiar with. I've moved lots of new places, and it can be an unnerving experience.

The heating is a type that blows through a register in the ceiling or floor. It can make the air very dry in the winter, so I would suggest that you get a humidifier for winter. Best if the heat is on the floor and the air conditioner is on the ceiling (heat rises/cold falls).

The battery heater (or an engine block heater) is used for very cold climates. I grew up in the Adirondack Mountain foothills and we never used one. When it was below -10 my Dad would heat up the truck and we'd wait in it with the heat blasting until the bus came. When it was -30 below I closed the door and the window broke from the temperature change! But with all of this we have never had an engine block heater. In the rare case that the battery would freeze a hairdryer with an extension cord works well. Just run your car 10-15 mins once it hits 20 degrees or so before you drive (you'll get to know how your car behaves).
If you do get an engine block heater I'd get it when you moved at a dealer. You've got lots of time until winter.
